Sustainability Initiatives & Responsible Tourism
The first of its kind in the archipelago, The Sustainability Lab acts as a hub for education and regeneration at Sirru Fen Fushi, Private Lagoon Resort. Specialised machinery is used to transform plastic waste into bespoke souvenirs, creative furniture and essential products for local schools. Additionally, ghost nets are recycled into bracelets and luggage tags through braiding while the hotel’s reverse osmosis water treatment plant produces clean drinking water for guests. This further reduces the use of single use plastics, which can pollute the waters around the island and impact the local wildlife. And with various innovative conservation initiatives in place, you can immerse yourself in the surrounding nature while rubbing shoulders with breathtaking tropical species.
Conservation
Conservation efforts in places like the Maldives are so vital to the wellbeing of the oceans, and Sirru Fen Fushi, Private Lagoon Resort understands the importance of taking part in sustainability initiatives and blending art, entertainment, and sustainability into one.
In their efforts to protect the diverse eco-biology, Sirru Fen Fushi, Private Lagoon Resort is home to the Coralarium, designed by Jason Decaires Taylor and the world's first and only underwater coral regeneration project art installation. The Coralarium offers a sanctuary for marine life, including fish, crustaceans and more ocean creatures, providing you with a new experience to engage with a blend of art and nature.
As well as the beautiful Coralarium, the resort takes part in other initiatives that protect marine wildlife, including the manta ray trust and turtle ranger programme – these are important as these creatures are susceptible to climate change, the impact of which is devastating.
To lessen the burden that the resort has on the Maldivian landscape, the hotel is becoming more energy efficient using solar technologies and has launched the Sustainability Lab - the first of its kind in the archipelago. The lab will fully recycle glass and aluminium and turn plastic waste into bespoke souvenirs and unique products. They also host beach and reef clean up events around the resort and local islands, and educate guests on sustainable practices.
