Is long haul the best option for a hot holiday in April?

While you can find some warm weather in Europe come April, if you're looking for somewhere really hot your best option will be to venture further afield.

April is a perfect time to visit the Caribbean, when it's quieter than the peak season and still offers lovely warm weather. If you really want to keep your flying time short, though, Spain's Canary Islands are one of the hottest places in Europe during Easter, while the Costa del Sol offers plenty of daily sunshine.

Barbados is one of our top destinations in the month of April. Its Caribbean weather and cheerful atmosphere is a cure for the spring shower blues that you’ll leave behind in the UK. With April sitting just toward the end of the peak season, it's an ideal time to visit, with beautiful sunny weather and fewer crowds.

With easy flight options, a host of relaxing luxury hotels and villas, crystal-clear waters and some of the tastiest food in the Caribbean, Barbados has so much going for it for an April escape. Of course, during April you'll want to make the most of the dry weather at the soft sand beaches on the west side of the island.

2. Rest, relaxation and golf in Mauritius - 25°C

Season: End of summer

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the African continent, with beautiful hilly landscapes, cascading waterfalls, white sand beaches and turquoise waters. The temperature stays at an average of 25°C in April and, as summer is coming to an end, the rainfall begins to tail off.

One of the benefits about visiting this beautiful country in April is that for snorkelling, scuba diving and deep sea game-fishing, visibility is at it’s best due to calmer seas. 

So much of the coastline in Mauritius is untouched, leaving it as a pure paradise with plenty of opportunities to unwind. The island is also great for outdoor activities; take a two-hour hike and climb up Le Pouce to see the capital St Louis from all perspectives, or take a Jeep safari through the stunning rainforests.

Golfers will also have plenty of top courses to try out, especially by staying at Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort. This beach retreat connects to the prestigious Le Château Golf Course, renowned as one of the Indian Ocean's best courses, and the new La Réserve Golf Links. You'll also have Bel Ombre Nature Reserve on your doorstep, where you can enjoy hikes, quad bike rides and sunset safari tours, plus the hotel has some excellent restaurants to chose from such as the pan-Asian hotspot, Gin'ja.

3. Get back to nature in Western Australia - 26°C

Season: Autumn

Flight time from UK: To Perth on the west coast is around 18 and a half hours.

Now for something a little different, but no less spectacular.

Do you want to get away from it all, feel one with nature and enjoy quiet time by the ocean?

We suggest venturing down under to western Australia. The weather here in April is hot during the day with endless amounts to see and do. One of the amazing things about this side of the world is the wide open landscapes and the native wildlife, such as the country's iconic kangaroos, offering plenty of adventurous experiences.

To see the best of the wilderness, you’ll want to head to the outback and visit places like Exmouth, Ningaloo Reef and the Cape Range National Park. From here, you can swim with whale sharks from late March through to July, stargaze under the twinkling sky with no light pollution and explore through the winding gorges in the Australian bush. 

This remote western Australia location is best experienced by fully immersing yourself. 4. Family fun in Thailand - 29°C

One of Asia’s most popular luxury holiday spots, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island located off its southern coast in the Andaman Sea. It's renowned for its many superb beaches, rocky capes, mountains and forested hills.

Perfect for family holidays during Easter, resort options include Anantara Mai Khao. This tropical playground is laid out in the style of a traditional Thai village, with a selection of child-friendly villas to choose from - all with private pools for extra convenience. There's plenty to keep all ages busy here, from cooking classes to jungle exploring and surfing lessons.

One of our favourite excursions while in Phuket is exploring Hong Island, one of the most beautiful islands along the Andaman coast. In the middle of this beautiful island lies a hidden lagoon. Majestic rocks rise dramatically out of the water and are interspersed with mangroves and fascinating hidden caves. Get up close to the caves with a trip on a guided sea canoe or long tail boat. 

For more island-hopping, take in the larger Phi Phi Don and the smaller Phi Phi Ley islands by speedboat. Phi Phi Ley was the setting for the Hollywood film 'The Beach', which was shot mainly at the picturesque Maya Bay. At Phi Phi Don discover the amazing limestone cliffs, long sandy beaches and the clear emerald water. 

5. Twin-centre bliss in the British Virgin Islands & Antigua - 26°C

How does a holiday to two incredible Caribbean islands sound for Easter? 

With year-round sunshine, sparkling seas and luxurious hotels, there's so much to love about the Caribbean in April. For an undisturbed escape, look to the British Virgin Islands.

Take your first step into your holiday at Rosewood Little Dix Bay, an eco-conscious resort located on a stunning crescent beach in totally tranquil surroundings. From here, you can head into the water with snorkelling gear or with a kayak trip. 6. Living it up in Miami - 26°C

The best time to visit Miami is March to May when the temperatures hover around the mid 20’s and rainfall stays relatively low, giving you all the time in the world to soak up the heavenly beach vibes during an Easter break in April.

Miami is famed for it’s beaches, but there's more to Miami than just sun and sand. If you love to shop until you drop, head to the Bal Harbour, Aventura Mall, Lincoln Road and Brickell Centre and outlet mall at Sawgrass Mills.

Visit unique neighbourhoods such as Little Havana, the Design District, and the Street Art of Wynwood Walls for a taste of culture in the area; make sure you pick up a cortadito coffee and stop by the excellent Cuban restaurants in the city. Miami is the perfect place to be for evening entertainment from varied nightlife attractions to superb mouth-watering restaurants. 

The fun doesn’t stop there. We suggest heading outside the city for a day trip - take in the Everglades or view Miami from a seaplane. The other fantastic option, being so close to the water, is sailing a luxury yacht around the bay, soaking up the sun and drinking pina colada.

If you don't want to go far for a dose of heat in April, consider the Canary Islands - in particular, Tenerife. 

With majestic mountains for hiking and beautiful beaches for unwinding on, Tenerife is perfect for a holiday in April. The mild climate is enough to warm you up, but not so hot as to stop you from enjoying some active pursuits.

Stay at Tivoli La Caleta to be just a stroll away from the quiet fishing village of La Caleta on the island's southwest coast. Along this rocky stretch of shore, fishing boats bob in the bay, laden with fresh seafood for the array of waterside restaurants. Indeed, the area is becoming something of a foodie hotspot, with flavours of the sea served up with beautiful sunset views. 

Also near to Tivoli La Caleta is Costa Adeje, a more well-known hub of attractions for Tenerife. Come here for family-friendly beaches, a trove of restaurants and, if you're travelling with little ones, the fun-filled Siam Park.

Back at the resort, relax at your choice of three swimming pools, wander the 18,000 sqm of tropical gardens and dine on Asian and Mediterranean dishes at the beach club - what better way to spend the month of April?

8. A cultural break in Morocco - 25°C

Looking for something a little more cultural for your April escape?

Springtime in Morocco offers a a world of new experiences, all while being just a short four-hour flight away.

Enjoy the comfortably warm temperatures in Marrakech, the country's exotic and romantic hub of activity. Nestled in the shadows of the Atlas Mountains, this city is the place to go to wander among the bustling handicraft stalls - stop to admire the leatherware, carpets, pottery and jewellery, choosing your favourites to take home with you.

Spring is also ideal for hiking in Morocco. Head out to the High Atlas Mountains and follow the pathways through the local Berber villages. For added culture, stop by a local farm for a private cooking class, or head to the YSL Museum to admire traditional Berber clothing, craftwork and jewels.

There are plenty of other highlights to discover outside of the Marrakech area, too.
