The coastal port city of Guayaquil has, in the past, been thought of as the jumping-off point for departures to the Galapagos Island, with most flights going via the city. No longer just the commercial centre of Ecuador, Guayaquil is a vibrant city with a number of high-rise skyscrapers that give it a ‘big city’ feel. However, the city’s riverfront plazas along the Rio Guayas provide the most authentic slice of life, where residents congregate to eat in the restaurants and converse with friends in the many bars. Here, the historic barrio of Las Peñas overlooks the river and provides an anchor both geographically and historically in the beating heart of the city.

Like many of Ecuador’s other cities, including Quito, Guayaquil has also seen an influx of regeneration cash which has developed its squares, parks and urban areas into attractive community spaces, while a theatre, film and arts scene flourishes thanks to a number of large universities.
