The Wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater Must Be Seen to Be Believed.

The Ngorongoro Crater formed when a large volcano erupted and collapsed inwards over two million years ago.

Today, the UNESCO World Heritage Site spreads 16 kilometres across and is the largest unflooded volcanic crater in the world. From the crater rim, walls thickly forested with vegetation plunge 600 metres down to the valley floor, creating a natural amphitheatre that supports a huge variety of wildlife all year round. Ngorongoro Crater holidays are heaven for animal lovers, or those seeking an extra special safari experience. The crater plays host to large herds of zebra and wildebeest, proud buffalo, elegant eland and fearsome predators including the lion, hyena and jackal – the highest density of lions and predators in Africa resides here. The rare and endangered black rhino can be seen regularly within the crater, and a plethora of birdlife including cranes, ostriches and secretary birds live within the grasslands and swamps. As well as the wildlife, Maasai tribesmen graze their cattle in the crater.
