Discover Borneo's unique flora and fauna: aside from the renowned orangutan, you will see Bornean Sun Bears and keep a look out for the rare Silver Leaf Monkey. The Abai Jungle Lodge is an excellent base from which to explore Borneo's famous Kinabatangan River.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival Kota Kinabalu

On arrival in Kota Kinabalu you will be met and transferred to your hotel, Shangri La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa. Check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2 Kota Kinabalu – Kinabalu Park

After breakfast, check-out and drive through scenic countryside to Kinabalu National Park Headquarters. Stop briefly at Nabalu before arriving at Kinabalu Park. After lunch, rejuvenate at the Poring Hot Springs. For a close look at nature, take to the 41m high Canopy Walkway which offers spectacular views of the Borneo Rainforest. After check into your hotel, you are free to explore the park at leisure.

Day 3 Kinabalu Park - Sepilok

Wake up early to appreciate the imposing beauty of Mount Kinabalu. After breakfast your morning is free at leisure. Check out in the late morning and travel overland to Sandakan, stopping en-route for lunch at a local restaurant. Arrive Sepilok Nature Lodge for check-in. In the evening, enjoy an hour guided night walk to the Sepilok Forest Trails to experience spotting animals and insects in the dark.

Day 4 Sepilok

This morning, proceed to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre where you can observe orangutan being rehabilitated for release back in to their natural habitat. From here continue on to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre; their mission is to give captured sun bears a better home and restore their right to live in the wild. Depart the centre for local lunch before heading to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Return back to Sepilok Nature Lodge for overnight and evening at leisure.

Day 5 Abai

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Sandakan Jetty for your boat to Abai Jungle Lodge Resort for lunch before check in. The rest of your afternoon is free to relax at the nature boardwalk. Later, you'll experience a cruise to search for more wildlife until the sun sets. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, head to the nature boardwalk to search for wildlife with a nature guide.

Day 6 Abai

Wake up to the sounds of nature. This morning take an early river trip to the Pitas Oxbow Lake to observe the unique wildlife. After breakfast, you are invited to join a tree planting project with the locals, enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villagers at Abai village. After lunch, you are free to explore the nature board walk behind the lodge on the look out for wildlife. Late afternoon, take another river cruise to search for different wildlife.

Day 7 Abai - Sandakan - Kota Kinabalu

In the morning, you are free to view more birds/wildlife and enjoy a cup of coffee at the nature board walk to have another chance at spotting an orangutan in the wild. After breakfast, take a one hour boat cruise back to Sandakan. Upon arrival at jetty, early lunch at local restaurant before proceeding back to Kota Kinabalu.
