A holiday in South Africa is multi-layered, folding rugged mountains, historic battlefields and sweeping beaches into one trip of a lifetime. This jam-packed itinerary set across KwaZulu-Natal lets you tease all the details out of South Africa’s vibrant landscape, from lively restaurants to velvet-soft sands, with overnight stays at some of the region’s finest hotels.

Beginning in Drakensberg, get a feel for rustic rural living in South Africa’s deep countryside, surrounded by a stunning mountain backdrop calling out for brave hikers to take on its trails. Conquer the footpaths if you wish, or take the rugged terrain by bike, or horseback, or simply find a bench en route and absorb the mighty views.

Head north to the history-laden land of Rorke’s Drift, a significant site on the map of the Anglo-Zulu War, where your luxury hotel sets you right above the famous battlefields. The rolling landscape ahead is frequented by beautiful birdlife and game, sightings which set you up for your next stop in Rhino Sands, where your five-star hotel awaits to offer an incredible safari experience.

Following a few days in the bush, your final stops will be Simangaliso Wetland Park and the North Coast, where your trip will ease into a tranquil conclusion at these beachside havens. Offering the kind of sun, sand, sea and beautiful views that only South Africa can offer, spend your final days in secluded bliss.

Itinerary

Drakensberg
Embrace luxurious rural living in Drakensberg at the Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, an intimate retreat of flickering log fires, delicious gourmet food and cosy cottage furnishing. Once settled here, you’ll find plenty of ways to explore the great expanse of Drakensberg Mountains. Enjoy a hiking adventure across Highmoor Nature Reserve, travel horseback across the rolling hills, try your hand at trout fishing on the Little Mooi River or head to Kamberg to admire the 3,000-year-old rock art.
Fugitives Drift Lodge
The infamous battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift transpired on the grasslands beneath Fugitives’ Drift property, a world-renowned Natural Heritage Site. Overlook the scenes of this historic phenomenon from your luxurious lodge, or the Guest House, set with panoramic views over Zululand, where beautiful birdlife and game often make an appearance. Spend the day on an invigorating battlefield tour before fine dining through the evening on exquisite local cuisine.
Manyoni Private Game Reserve
Tucked away in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve, the five-star Rhino Sands is your gateway to South Africa’s classic safari experience. Set up base in your luxury tented suite, with stunning river views and a private swimming pool, before heading out into the bush. There are two daily game drives to take you out into the wilderness, beginning at sunrise, with a chance to spot lion, cheetah, rhino, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and so much more.
Simangaliso Wetland Park
Thonga Beach Lodge is a sunlit paradise, a popular romantic escape for couples seeking simple seclusion with just sand, sea, corals and freshwater lakes. Make the most of the vast ocean with a whole host of water-based activities, including turtle tracking, scuba diving, kayaking, snorkelling and fishing. Land dwellers can opt for forest walks, birding, and cultural tours to local homesteads, schools and clinics.
Sala Beach House
End your trip on a high at Sala Beach House, sending you home calm and collected, with serene sea views, indulgent spa treatments and candlelit dinners. Spend your days strolling along the scenic beach, spotting dolphins as they duck and dive across the waters, and your long evenings reclined on your spacious terrace, with a cocktail in hand.
