Hotel information
Wheatleigh is an exceptional Berkshire hotel, the winner of multiple awards for its rooms, service standards and fine dining cuisine.
Surrounded by mountains and acres of private landscaped gardens, forests and lawns, the scene is truly set for a regal stay in this stunning 19th-century mansion complete with Romanesque pillars, stone balconies and just 19 exclusive guestrooms.
While here you can’t help but be enamoured by Wheatleigh’s infinitely elegant interior design, which compliments the building’s grand exterior and grounds perfectly as high-ceilinged rooms are lined with European style ornaments, artworks and glass cabinets full of antiques. Large and original Tiffany windows also let in plenty of light and although Wheatleigh is unashamedly attached to its history and heritage, the rest of the furnishings and fixtures throughout are actually very modern, meaning the best of both worlds.
As a Leading Hotel of the World, it should also be no surprise that internationally recognised fine dining is another part of the Wheatleigh package, with some food critics claiming the onsite Portico by Jeffrey Thompson Restaurant to be one of the best in New England; maybe in the entire country. This is the first of two restaurants, plus an award-winning wine lounge, outdoor tennis courts, a gym, massage room and quaint oval swimming pool surrounded by trees and flowerbeds. Then, with easy access to the highlights of Berkshire, Tanglewood Music Festival, ski slopes, hiking and biking routes plus the hotel’s own golf course just a few miles away, Wheatleigh really does stand out as something special indeed.
Room Options
Just 19 guestrooms and suites make up the accommodation choices at Wheatleigh, each following a similar décor pattern of refined soft furnishings, cream and dark wood hues, thick drapes framing every tall window and various artworks on the walls. They do differ in shape and size thanks to the building’s original architecture though free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, modern entertainment systems, a queen or king-size bed and designer toiletries come as standard.
The Small Room
Aptly named, The Small Room is certainly cosy though still larger than some hotel rooms at 120sq ft, and happily finds space for a double bed and bathtub, though this is the only room which doesn’t feature the large windows and views found in the other categories.Superior Room
The Superior Room at Wheatleigh offers either park or courtyard views, a queen-size bed and plush bathroom within its 140sq ft floorplan.Deluxe Room
Deluxe Rooms provide a real step up with their stone fireplaces, king-size beds and enhanced courtyard or park views, plus a seating area and nice high ceilings.Junior Suite
The Wheatleigh Junior Suite comes either with or without a balcony, as well as an enhanced floorplan, seating area with comfy armchairs, fantastic views through large windows, a vintage-style bathtub and separate shower.Terrace Suite
A quite simply stunning suite at Wheatleigh, this room is situated on the ground floor and opens out onto its own large, columned terrace overlooking the grounds, topped by original wooden beams and surrounded by a stone balcony. Inside you’ll find a king-size bed, lounge area and luxe bathroom with both a vintage-style bathtub and separate shower.Aviary Suite
Split across two floors that connect via a twisting staircase enclosed by windows, the Aviary Suite is the cream of the crop with its separate living rooms opening onto a private furnished terrace, loft bedroom and large bathroom with separate bathtub and rain shower.Palazzo
If travelling to New England as a group, the entire Wheatleigh property including all guestrooms, restaurants and facilities is available for private hire, for something truly special.Facilities/Amenities
One of the main attractions at Wheatleigh is its sprawling 22 acres of gardens, lakes and forests dotted with fountains, picnic benches and patios. The property itself also has a small but scenic outdoor swimming pool surrounded by trees, tennis courts, a gym and massage room, its own golf course nearby plus Wi-Fi and free onsite parking.
Restaurants & Bars
The Portico by Jeffrey Thompson
Highly exclusive, award-winning and considered by some food critics as one of the best fine dining experiences in New England, Wheatleigh’s Portico by Jeffrey Thompson serves up truly exceptional Haute French cuisine across its changeable multi-course menu. The setting is thoroughly elegant too, as just a handful of tables look out onto the hotel gardens as you dine; this is world-class, cutting-edge New England gastronomy.
- Dinner
S/T
With its dark wood dining tables and coffee-coloured walls, soft lighting and delicate cornicing, S/T is a fully grown-up dining space – relaxed though very refined. The ethos behind the cuisine here is creating classic recipes to unquestionably high standards, using top quality ingredients throughout an unashamedly indulgent menu that changes with the seasons.

The Lounge
Tall ceilings, large windows looking out over the surrounding trees and an award-winning wine cellar to choose from, Wheatleigh’s Lounge bar has it all, plus a furnished patio and tapas-style menu of small plates too.
Activities & Entertainment
Entertaining and gastronomy go hand-in-hand while staying at Wheatleigh, with unmissable BBQ, cocktail and live jazz evenings hosted on the hotel’s upper terrace from June to September, depending on which days of the week you visit. That same al fresco dining patio is also used for multi-course wine pairing dinners that are just as memorable, while elsewhere you have the Berkshire Botanical Gardens, multiple museums, theatres and the famous Tanglewood Music Festival within easy reach. Hiking and biking through the pristine Berkshire countryside is also popular here, so too kayaking on the Deerfield River during summer and skiing at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in winter.
