Vast, beautiful and sparsely populated, Australia’s Northern Territory is waiting to be explored.
The land of the dream time, the spirit heart of Australia. Near the top end, and the capital, Darwin, are the National parks of Kakadu and Litchfield, studded with sacred Aboriginal sites, and the wilderness of Arnhemland.
Wonder at the vast starry skies of the remote Red Centre, home of the mystical monolith Uluru (Ayers Rock) The Northern Territory enjoys the great quality of space, each consisting of large tracts of unspoiled wilderness or outback that are home to some of Australia's most awe-inspiring natural wonders, most magnificent landscapes and most special experiences.
Combining all three of these aspects is Uluru (Ayers Rock); this dramatically sculpted monolith shows off its fabulous colours best of all at sunrise or sunset. An Aboriginal guided walk here and at nearby Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) explains the cultural significance of these sacred sites. The other 'must-do' is to absorb the desert solitude and glittering night sky with dinner under the stars.
In the far north, the wetlands of Kakadu National Park showcase an abundance of birdlife and are home to one of nature's more fearsome species, the crocodile. It's also an area rich in indigenous culture. Then to the west lie the spectacular outback gorges and endless horizons of the Kimberley and, for an incredible contrast, the miles of wonderful white sand beaches of Broome Rock and hardy outback town of Alice Springs.
