Hotel information
A dazzling example of New England heritage and history, combined with ocean views and landscaped gardens, The Chanler at Cliff Walk is the grand dame of luxury hotels in Newport, Rhode Island.
Anyone who likes a heavy dose of history while on holiday should reserve a regal Chanler at Cliff Walk room in Rhode Island, where heritage and luxurious modern lifestyles gloriously collide.
The Chanler was originally a mansion built in 1873, though it has been used as a summer home, girls’ school, Navy accommodation and museum over the years.
However, it has been given a new lease of life as The Chanler hotel since 2003, providing a unique kind of accommodation for visitors to this coastal town with its distinct heritage and 20 individually designed guestrooms.
Each room or villa then epitomises a particular age, destination or architecture, exceptionally styled with antiques and materials from Europe (and beyond) for the most special of stays in Rhode Island.
Aside from its interior grandeur, The Chanler goes on to entice guests with its beautiful landscaped gardens and sweeping ocean views. There are also two restaurants to dine at – Cara and The Café – plus a handsome bar and picnic service should you wish to take lunch out in the garden. All this, plus sweeping staircases, ornate chandeliers, gilded touches and concierge services make The Chanler at Cliff Walk an outstanding hotel in Newport, Rhode Island.
Room Options
The 20 individually decorated rooms and villas at The Chanler are rather special retreats indeed. Every guestroom is inspired by a particular period or place, so each colour palette, furnishing and textile is different to the next. From going back in time to the Renaissance or experiencing a slice of Morocco, there’s a room to suit every taste and luxury around each corner. Modern conveniences come aplenty too, with Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, coffee machines and heated floors adding more elements of comfort.
Manor Room
There are six Manor Rooms to choose from: Colonial, Greek Revival, Federal, Williamsburg, Victorian and French Provincial, their style and design reflective of their names. The views are of either the ocean or garden (or both), and you can also expect a queen-size bed, hand-picked antiques and delightful décor. Note that two of these rooms have private patios (Colonial and Greek Revival), while two more have fireplaces (Federal and the split-level French Provincial).Estate Room
There are four Estate Rooms at the hotel, which have bigger floorplans than the Manor options, as well as jetted tubs and either a queen, king or California king-size bed; the majority also flaunting ocean views. Expect regal English style and a fireplace in the Georgian; a living room and stucco walls in the Mediterranean; a fireplace and North African décor in the open-plan Moroccan; and sleigh bed with Napoleonic flair in the Empire.Signature Room
Channelling Louis XVI, the Renaissance, English Tudor and Regency, the four Signature Rooms are yet more decadent and spacious. All are decked out with beautiful king-size beds, ocean or garden views, living areas and a separate jetted tub in the bathrooms. Regency is a regal affair inspired by King George III, while the Louis XVI is simply stunning with its Neoclassical charm. The Renaissance is a romantic hideaway whereas the English Tudor is a more handsome retreat.Garden Villa
The Briar Rose, English Trellis and Peonies and Ivy are the three Garden Villas at this Rhode Island hotel. Each flaunts garden views, a private entrance, courtyard and Jacuzzi outside, plus a queen-size bed (two in the English Trellis to accommodate more than two adults) and jetted tub inside; the Briar Rose also features its own rose garden.Ocean Villa
The three Ocean Villas – Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island and Nantucket – are set above the coast for unrivalled views of the sea, with French windows opening out onto an al fresco patio to make you feel even closer to your surroundings. Each has a private entrance, courtyard, Jacuzzi and sauna as well as a jetted tub, fireplace and either queen or king-size beds.Facilities/Amenities
Guests of The Chanler at Cliff Walk are given free access to the gym at a nearby International Tennis Hall of Fame, and while there is no spa or pool here, you’re sure to enjoy plenty of pampering. In-room massages are available, or why not make use of the complimentary house car service, ask for a bath butler or even enjoy a picnic prepared for you on the hotel lawns? You can also toast s’mores by the firepit while lapping up ocean views from your deck chair – taking it easy is always the order of the day here!
Restaurants & Bars
Cara
The perfect accompaniment to The Chanler’s upscale design and accommodation is Cara, an onsite restaurant specialising in European cuisine spanning France, Spain and Italy. Open for dinner only, you can opt for one of the set menus: a three-course prix fixe, or one of two six-course tastings (either from the sea or countryside), which might be laden with delights such as oysters, pork belly, lobster or scallops, to be relished while enjoying views of Easton Bay.
- Dinner
The Café
Also whipping up moreish dishes from Europe, The Café is much like a Mediterranean brasserie where you can feast on anything from salads to sandwiches, tapas to grilled meat or fish. You can sit either indoors while looking towards the sea, out on a terrace or up at the bar; the choice is yours.
