Hotel information
Believe it or not, Ocean House has been a popular Rhode Island hotel in Watch Hill since the mid-18th century, having first opened its doors to the great and the good in 1868.
Thankfully, this enticing heritage can be seen throughout the property, its original architecture and structure beautifully preserved: from semi-open-air terraces lined with stone pillars to a steep tiled roof typical of the time, even the window frames have remained!
The result is a truly unique luxury hotel on the New England Coast, a place where croquet on the lawn, high tea on the terrace, butler service and fine dining farm-to-table cuisine are all perfectly normal pastimes.
Ocean House is a five-star USA travel experience the way it used to be, with no less than 5,000 individual artefacts, ornaments, pieces of furniture and artwork having survived – indeed are still being used – throughout the property to this day. It’s all possible because the owners here have proudly renovated every inch to bring this luxury New England resort singing and dancing right into the 21st century, taking tales of its former glory and elevating them to all-new heights.
The stunning, historical building is just the start of the story at Ocean House, Rhode Island. There’s a private beach here which is a great advantage for families, as well as an endless list of activities: think cookery classes, croquet, yoga and Pilates, to name a few. You can dine at the chef’s table, enjoy a private wine tasting in the cellar, perhaps some personal training if the mood takes you or, if travelling to Rhode Island as a family, send the kids off for some themed games and take yourself off to the spa or beauty salon. Alternatively, if looking to explore the wider highlights of New England, why not grab a set of keys to one of Ocean House’s Mercedes Benz luxury cars, and head out on a day trip?
You then have a swathe of eateries available at the hotel itself, including everything from laidback beach bars to fine dining restaurants, plus that signature spa with a gym and sauna; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; huge surrounding gardens; and sea views at every turn. Take this, the impossibly elegant décor adorning larger than average guestrooms, and the delights of booking your luxe stay at Rhode Island’s Ocean House soon become impossible to resist.
Room Options
, guestrooms and 18 suites make up the accommodation options at Ocean House, all of them decorated in the same stately manner as the rest of the property. This means white window shutters, Victorian-style pottery and ceramics, low-key linens and dark wood furniture filling spaces that range from cosy 375sq ft rooms to multi-bedroom suites or studios with their own kitchen, separate lounge and terraces. However, no matter which of the many categories and sizes you choose, you can expect decidedly modern bathrooms with chrome fittings, Molton Brown toiletries, rain showers and bathtubs; as well as queen-size beds, plush robes and slippers, Wi-F, iPod docking stations and smart room controls.
Standard Guestroom
Standard Guestrooms at Ocean House enjoy a fantastic use of space, with the extra light pouring in from large windows and a glass door also helping them feel more spacious than the 375sq ft floorplan would suggest.Deluxe Guestroom
Providing the same in-room amenities and décor as the Standard Room, Deluxe Guestrooms enjoy a larger floorplan, standalone bathtub plus a terrace and sea views for most.Grand Deluxe Guest Room
At nearly twice the size of a Standard Room, Grand Deluxe Guestrooms boast a pleasant lounge area with sofas and a fireplace, as well as all necessary in-room extras included across the board.Ocean View Terrace Suite
Book a Suite at Ocean House for the private terrace, light-giving French windows and deep soak bathtub alone, a fantastic accommodation option along with its living room, sofas, a fireplace and dining area.Facilities/Amenities
Ocean House really does go the extra mile in ensuring its lucky guests have either everything onsite, or available at their fingertips to uncover Rhode Island and wider New England a little further. While here you’ll have a fleet of Mercedes Benz cars at your disposal for self-guided day trips, plus parking if you are already driving through the USA. At the hotel itself there’s both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, signature spa and gym, a tournament-level croquet lawn, bikes to rent, squash courts, Wi-Fi and room service all on offer.
Restaurants & Bars
Summer Dining
During summertime, Ocean House opens a host of extra eateries available only at this time of year. These include a seafront terrace bar and fresh seafood veranda, Mediterranean cuisine served in a separate cottage nestled among the sand dunes, outdoor BBQs and even a so-called Secret Garden, where Veuve Clicquot champagne is the order of the day. There really is no shortage of atmospheric environments to enjoy your al fresco dining experience during summertime here.
Throughout the year, Ocean House also has pop-up restaurants, open-kitchen dining events and its own culinary and wine tasting classes; fine gastronomy is a key of any stay here.
The Bistro
The Bistro is a relatively relaxed Ocean House restaurant, what with its comfy dining chairs and roaring fireplace, though the food served here is still just as lip-smacking. Considering themselves to be a ‘classic American brasserie’, you’ll find staples such as grilled steak and seared salmon on the menu, as well as seafood and salads too, depending on the time of year.

Coast
True, world-class fine dining at its absolute best. The seasonal restaurant of Coast not only promotes locally sourced produce and changeable flavour fusions depending on the time of year, but the presentation of each plate is also second to none.

The Living Room
A homely space to sit and enjoy afternoon tea, the Living Room does exactly as its name suggests – the sofas and fireplace helping no end.
Activities & Entertainment
Firstly, Ocean House is an ideally placed Rhode Island hotel, so exploring the surrounding area with its antique shops, museums, beaches such as Napatree Point and East Beach or Watch Hill Lighthouse – among many other nearby attractions and New England daytrips – is extremely easy. In addition, Ocean House also puts on an honourable list of daily activities, clubs and courses that change throughout the year. These include its Wine & Culinary Arts Program held in a private kitchen and wine cellar, as well as croquet clinics, art lessons, cultural events, yoga, aqua fit, Pilates and personal training classes, chef’s table experiences, a private beach to enjoy and fun-filled kids’ activities in summer too.
