Full accommodation information

A member of Relais & Châteaux, which is recognised as offering some of the world’s finest hotels, chefs and restaurants, Sonora Resort is British Columbia’s premier wilderness resort.

This upscale resort is situated among mountains, forests and salmon-rich waters at the northern end of Desolation Sound on Sonora Island.

The resort can only be accessed by air or water, with scheduled float-plane flights available from Vancouver and Seattle, helicopter transfers from Vancouver and by boat from Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The resort comprises 88 ocean view rooms and suites housed in five lodge buildings and two oceanfront four-bedroom villas. Resort amenities include a heated outdoor swimming pool, covered tennis courts, putting green, 12-seat movie theatre and fitness centre. Island Currents Spa is a getaway where you can unwind and enjoy a selection of body treatments and a complimentary water journey that includes outdoor hot and cold mineral pools with views over the ocean.

Sonora Resort offers an array of exhilarating experiences, creating a true wilderness adventure. Head out on to the water in a 12-seat motorboat on Sonora’s Eco-Adventure tour in search of marine life including sea lions and killer whales, and watch Pacific white-sided dolphins frolic and feed in the ocean. Minke, Grey and Humpback whales sometimes pass by here too.

Helicopter adventures include heli-fly fishing and glacier scenic flights, while back on the water you can fish in what is called the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’ on a guided salmon fishing tour. During late August, September and October, Grizzly bears can be found feasting on spawning salmon along the Orford River. Tours take you by boat into Bute Inlet and over the Arran and Yuculta Rapids, before your Homalco First Nation guide takes you through the mossy rainforest to viewing towers on the riverbank, where Grizzly bears can often be spotted.

A series of well-marked hiking and biking trails meander through this vast wilderness of rugged coastline and rainforest. Take the three-mile former logging road to Florence Lake where you can make use of complimentary stand-up paddleboards, canoes and pedal boats. We recommend taking a picnic with you to make it a full-day experience.

Tyee Dining Room faces the sea and offers panoramic views across the water and to the mountains beyond. Enjoy gourmet dining and feast on seasonal west coast fare, whether you choose from the À La Carte menu or the Chef’s Tasting Menu – where each course is paired with the perfect wine. Each meal will be a highlight of your Sonora Resort holiday.

Gold rooms are found in three of five ocean-facing lodges, Arbutus, Gillard and Haida Lodges. Enjoy views of Yuculta Rapids and the mountain ranges from your room. Lodges feature common lounges with stone fireplaces as well as roof-top hot tubs or garden patios.
Diamond Ocean View

Diamond Ocean View

More spacious than the Gold Rooms, the Diamond Ocean View Rooms also benefit from being positioned on the highest floors of Arbutus, Gillard, Haida and Yuculta Lodges affording some of the best views in the resort.
