With an elevated position that looks out over the Indian Ocean, not too far from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort, Vivanta by Taj – Bentota is a great place to stop for a breather on a multi-centre tour of Sri Lanka, or as a holiday destination unto itself.

All accommodation is impressively spacious, with even entry-level Superior Charm rooms boasting 295 square feet of space including a private balcony or terrace. A selection of suites offers decadent levels of spaciousness and exquisite sea views.

Mealtimes are a delight here, with an all-day dining restaurant offering excellent Sri Lankan and international flavours, as well as three speciality eateries. Sample the innovative fusion menu at Sea View which includes such diverse dishes as Lobster Cappuccino flambéed with cognac and Sri Lankan red rice risotto. Elsewhere try sumptuous seafood; outdoor dining options at S.H.A.C.K, positioned on a grassy nook at the ocean’s edge; or authentic Chinese fare can be enjoyed at Oriental Pavilion. For an aperitif or nightcap head to the hotel’s bar, Tease, with its buzzing atmosphere and live band each evening.

As well as a trip to Galle Fort, there are plenty of other enthralling experiences to be enjoyed nearby. Visit the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery to learn more about the conservation project to protect these majestic sea creatures, or if you’re visiting between October to March, take a cruise to spot whales and dolphins frolicking offshore. Superior Charm Rooms are approximately 367 square feet and offer partial Indian Ocean views.
