Full accommodation information

Perched on the shore of the south coast of Sri Lanka in Tangalle close to Mawella Beach, a blissful stretch of coastline celebrated for its relaxed and underdeveloped atmosphere; The Last House is dedicated to providing an intimate and restful experience, as well as an authentic insight into Sri Lankan culture.

Housing just 6 rooms, The Last House feels more like a guesthouse than it does a hotel. In fact, while it is open for individual guests, couples and small families who may just want a singular room, it’s also available for exclusive hire for large families or groups travelling together. With just a small collection of guests at any one time, you can enjoy truly personal service. During your stay you’ll be safe in the hands of a vibrant team of staff together with the manager, Ananda, who will also prepare all of the food you’ll be served. Flavourful Sri Lankan crab curry, outrageously fresh seafood and juicy fruit salads are just some of the things you can expect to try on the daily-changing menu, all lovingly created by Ananda in the property’s kitchen using fresh, local ingredients.

Envisioned by the legendary Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa, the design throughout The Last House is an authentic reflection of the local surroundings. Fresh whites are paired with vibrant oranges, yellows, blues and greens to create spaces that brim with joy and a sense of fun. Set across a complex of interlinked buildings, courtyards, walkways and manicured gardens, the property makes the best of indoor-outdoor living. Despite its small size, it feels like there are always new spaces to discover; here, a cooling swimming pool or there, a comfortable place to sit and rest a while.

Set amongst trees with paths leading down to the beach, The Last House is well placed to enjoy the sun, sea and sand that the region is famous for. The hotel has a collection of bodyboards you can take down to the beach if you like, or if you’re feeling particularly energetic you could even challenge the staff to a game of cricket or volleyball.

Nearby, there’s also plenty to explore. Mawalla Lagoon is within walking distance and close by is the gentile fishing town of Tangalle. Day trips can also be made to a number of exciting locations from here, including a trio of national parks where you can see some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic wildlife.

This compact guesthouse houses just 6 rooms which have each been lovingly designed to reflect Sri Lankan aesthetics and most boast views of the sea and beach below.
