Full accommodation information

Secluded on a quiet stretch of Balapitiya Beach on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, a short distance from Galle, Bentota and Hikkaduwa, this well-placed hotel provides brilliant access to some of the most popular regions in the country.

More of a boutique guesthouse than a hotel, this simple and private property offers just 10 different rooms and suites. This means that even at full capacity guests enjoy an intimate and restful atmosphere, and look forward to a feeling of exclusivity.

Each room boasts an array of luxurious amenities and soothingly chic interiors, as envisaged by Sri Lankan designer Annika Fernando. Bright white walls and furnishings are paired with fabrics in neutral, natural tones and bright splashes of colour to give a distinctly contemporary feel to each of the rooms and public spaces.

Time at the hotel can be spent lazing by the 23 m pool on the beachfront or enjoying the cooling Indian Ocean breeze on the rugged shore of Balapitiya Beach. Dotted throughout the grounds there are small shaded spaces that invite you to sit and take a moment to relax. Perhaps you’ll leaf through a few pages of your book on the sun deck, soak in the rays on the sunloungers or share a cocktail or two at tables on the manicured lawn.

Dining is also an intimate affair. There is just one kitchen on site which prepares a wide range of Sri Lankan and international dishes that are enjoyed throughout the resort.

With just 10 different rooms on offer, Kumu Beach guarantees their guests a peaceful stay and the space to truly unwind. All rooms and suites are ocean facing and some even feature a private balcony or terrace to enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings. Inside, rooms are decorated in a chic, contemporary style featuring a neutral palette of grey, dusty pink, brown and white. Wherever you choose to stay, you can expect your room to come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, plush furnishings and en suite bathrooms stocked with luxurious amenities.

This light-filled and spacious bedroom provides a true home-away-from-home. Look out over the grounds through picture windows from the comfort of your custom-built four-poster bed, or relax in the sunken living area. If you opt for a ground floor suite you can also enjoy direct access to the garden.

Time at the resort is generally very restful. Throughout the hotel’s grounds there are various relaxation spots, tables, chairs and loungers, and there’s also a 23 m pool at the end of the garden bordering the soft sand. Swimming is not permitted on this section of beach although it provides a calm and restful spot to enjoy the breeze and ocean views.

Forming part of the Madu Ganga River Estuary, many people who come to this region are hoping to see the turtles that are known to nest in this area. Our Travel Specialists can arrange for you to take a boat trip to the Madu Ganga wetland which is made up of many islands, mangroves and lakes, where you can see hundreds of different species of plants and animals, including crocodiles.

Nearby to the hotel there is a small town called Ambalangoda, which is a popular swimming spot and is also known for the Mask Museum which sells distinctive devil masks used in traditional dancing rituals. Nearby there is also a small fishing village named Balapitiya, which has been untouched by tourism and provides an authentic insight into Sri Lankan life.
