Step aboard a specially designed polar exploration ship for a spring journey into the frozen Arctic, discovering its wildlife, isolated villages and pristine, fragile landscapes.

Respectfully cruising the waters off Greenland’s east coast, this unique itinerary onboard Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot allows privileged access to the cold wilderness inaccessible to other vessels. Your journey will begin and end in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, giving you time to explore the historic centre or visit the famous Blue Lagoon. Cruise through the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland before heading to the icy landscapes of the Ammassalik and Blosseville regions. Then meet the Inuit people in their remote, colourful villages surrounded by snow, learning about life on the ice.

While there’s a commitment to luxury, there’s also an unwavering promise to prioritise the polar ecosystem, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. The ship is the very first hybrid electric polar exploration ship powered by liquified natural gas, and everything is created with the planet in mind.

Itinerary

Depart the UK on your flight to Iceland, arriving into Reykjavik. You’ll board your ship, Le Commandant Charcot, in the late afternoon. If your flight time allows, spend a few hours exploring Iceland’s coastal capital, perhaps visiting Perlan museum on Oskjuhlið Hill or the evangelical Hallgrímskirkja church, the charming streets of Skólavördustígur and Laugavegur in the historic centre.
A journey of epic proportions is on your itinerary today, as your ship sales through the Denmark Strait. First crossed by the Vikings in the 10th century, and known as being the battleground of the Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine during WW2, these historic waters are a natural playground and home to the world’s largest underwater waterfall.
Considered by many to be the most authentic and majestic region in the Arctic, you’ll follow in the footsteps of great explorers and discover this peaceful landscape for yourself. Spot wildlife, with sightings of whales, polar bears, seals and seabirds all possible. Then meet local Inuit people, learning about their spring traditions that mark the end of the winter, and head out on a dog sled trip across the frozen landscape.
Very few have been to this wild, hard-to-reach part of the world - an area named after Jules Poret de Blosseville, a French explorer who set off to discover eastern Greenland in 1833. The ice cap here comes straight from the North Pole; the wildlife, geography and history of this white desert, illuminated by the midnight sun, are there to be discovered through the programme of expert-led workshops and lectures.
In winter, extremely dense pack ice forms along the Greenlandic coasts and the Transpolar Drift sweeps icebergs along the strait almost year-round. Where the waters of the Greenland Sea and the warmer waters of the Irminger Sea merge, there's rich biodiversity, allowing cetacean species to thrive. From the comfort of the ship, you’ll learn about this unique stretch of water and the fluidity of life here.
Your cruise will come full circle, docking in the Icelandic capital. Depending on your flight time, there's the possibility to experience Reykjavik after you disembark Le Commandant Charcot; visit the Reykjanes peninsula and its famous thermal Blue Lagoon for a memorable way to mark the end of your Arctic adventure.
