A mere ten-minute drive from Queenstown, Rosewood Matakauri (formerly Matakauri Lodge) is a luxurious haven of a hotel poised above Lake Wakatipu, looking across to jaw-dropping mountains: The Remarkables, Cecil and Walter Peaks.
Rosewood Matakauri makes the most of this lakeside perch by granting far-reaching views of the glistening water and majestic mountains through wide glass windows, whether in the dining room, guest lounge or accommodation itself.
The hotel’s hub is its airy lounge, adorned with ochre sofas and a roaring fireplace, as well as a tempting al fresco terrace that also stars a fireplace and cosy throws to keep you toasty on those cooler nights.
This boutique Queenstown lodge certainly looks the part, with mod-furnishings and warm décor throughout, though it also goes on to offer simply delicious cuisine in its glass-encased restaurant, as well as a spa with heated pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. Even the gym boasts vistas across the lake!

Rosewood Matakauri has, thankfully, ensured that each room and suite is blessed with dazzling lake and mountain views, owed to immaculate glass windows and doors that open out onto a balcony or terrace; even in the entry-level Lodge Room. What’s more, many room types have bathrooms with tubs facing this spellbinding scene, as well as the bedrooms (with a choice of king-size or twin beds) and living rooms if staying in a suite or above. The look in all of them is modern-chic with a decidedly homely feel, making it all-too-easy to feel relaxed indoors and be at one with the stunning surrounds. The entry-level Lake View Deluxe Room is a gorgeous, 36sq m abode dressed in a palette of cream and honey with peachy hues.
