Hotel information
Faultless in its style and design, an unbeatable remote location, endless outdoor activities and a fine dining restaurant just for good measure, Mahu Whenua is, without question, one of the best, most memorable luxury eco-lodges in New Zealand.
For those lucky enough to stay here, time spent at Mahu Whenua is often the highlight of any luxury trip to New Zealand, such is the setting, standard and exclusivity of the property’s every aspect.
Beginning with the décor and style of the property, the owners refer to Mahu Whenua as a homestead though it’s every bit the design lodge too, so the scene is instantly set for a welcoming blend of homely comforts and top-end touches combined.
There is a real rustic-chic about everything, all bare stone walls, roaring fireplaces, sheepskin rugs and exposed beams throughout. Yet elsewhere furnishings are contemporary such as the oyster shell daybeds by the pool or standalone chrome bathtubs in some of the suites.
This fusion of styles works wonderfully well to create a traditional farmhouse experience in New Zealand on one hand, hip and happening luxury eco-lodge on the other.
Days here are best spent exploring the wonders of Mahu Whenua’s surrounding 200sq miles of pristine South Island landscape. You can take a helicopter tour of nearby Fiordland National Park, go horse riding through the forest, mountain bike, fish, hike, take a fun-filled 4 x 4 off-road drive or a photo safari in search of native wildlife; the list goes on. And, given that Mahu Whenua is actively involved in the preservation of this natural wonderland, you can be sure to find it all in pristine condition with no trace of human activity, and it is all exclusively on your doorstep.
The surrounding mountains, lakes, rivers and plains near Mahu Whenua offer somewhere infinitely special to explore, though the lodge itself is worthy of this, one of New Zealand’s finest natural wonders.
Whether unwinding by the heated pool or on the patio, enjoying a cocktail on the lawn, perhaps an in-suite massage or simply counting down the minutes until your next world-class gourmet meal here; staying at Mahu Whenua is nothing short of heavenly.
Room Options
All suites at Mahu Whenua come with striking views, either of the mountains at the property’s side or facing the lake and hills beyond. A king-size bed, rain shower and bathtub, Wi-Fi, complimentary minibar, air-conditioning, sofas and an outdoor deck area also come as standard. Cottage Suites include a well-equipped kitchenette and large private verandas too, while every suite at Mahu Whenua is decorated in the same absorbing style as found elsewhere, so traditional touches such as sheepskin throws and solid wooden beds sit harmoniously within an otherwise more contemporary space of minimalist artworks and glass-clad bathrooms.
Ridgeline and Homestead Suites
The delightful Ridgeline Suites provide a great range of views – to be admired through huge windows or on your veranda – and are either adjoined to the main homestead itself, or slightly separate to it.Komako Family Bunkroom
Similar to the other suites, though able to accommodate up to four people.Cottage Suite
The standalone Cottage Suite is ideal if looking for a little privacy, extra space including an in-room kitchenette and supreme valley views visible through wraparound windows; a great option for honeymooners.Tui Master Suite
The Tui Master Suite is supreme, offering the same style and king-size bed though also a larger decking area, freestanding copper bathtub facing the valley and a deluxe double walk-in rain shower too.Exclusive Use
If travelling to New Zealand as a group (up to 12 guests), you can hire the whole of Mahu Whenua for your own exclusive use.Facilities/Amenities
The standard and quality of everything at Mahu Whenua is second to none. The focus here is very much on the landscape, then enjoying your downtime in the most comfortable and serene surroundings possible when back in the house itself. As such, you won’t find countless facilities here because frankly, you don’t need them! However, the wonderful heated pool and surrounding patio are a delight at any time of day, spa services such as massage and reflexology can be easily arranged, there’s a lovely communal lounge area, Wi-Fi, plus a games room and library too; handy if travelling to New Zealand as a family.
Restaurants & Bars
Mahu Whenua Restaurant and Lounge

Everything is made onsite, each dish is both contemporary in technique and presentation though often traditional of the region too, all adding up to a world-class dining experience to be enjoyed every single day during your stay, either in the restaurant itself or out on the patio. Activities & Entertainment
With over 200sq miles of untouched South Island wilderness around you – mountains, rivers, open plains and forest trails – the choice of outdoor excursions and sightseeing tours here, between Wanaka and Queenstown, is as good as endless. You could take a helicopter tour over nearby Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks, perhaps the picturesque Milford Sound; or for something a little less adrenaline packed, the horse-riding trails through forests and verdant valleys are sublime. If you love biking, Mahu Whenua will drop you and your bike at the top of a mountain in one of their helicopters for a true once in a lifetime ride, though the same can also be done if you prefer to hike. There’s wine tasting in the Gibbston Valley, 4x4 off road drives, rock climbing, watersports on Lake Wanaka, skiing if visiting in winter and wellness, yoga, art and photography workshops no matter what the time of year. This, plus cocktails on the lawn each evening is just a taste of the what’s to come while staying at the Mahu Whenua homestead lodge.
