Hotel information
On the Point is among the more unique hotels in Rotorua, not least thanks to its prized waterfront setting on the shores of Lake Rotorua – with instant access to a small beach and private jetty – though also its historic architecture and traditional interior design.
The building was once a private mansion back in the 1930s, meaning all the suites are suitably large and enjoy fantastic lake views, in keeping with the property’s original layout.
On the Point then makes a distinct effort to retain some of that regal feel, particularly in the communal areas and dining room which feel like a momentary step back in time, all fireplaces and vintage furniture, wood-panelled walls and decorative chandeliers.
That said, the guestrooms are decidedly more modern with their underfloor heating, spa bathtubs, air-conditioning and fully 21st-century décor, all boasting a private terrace or balcony which is always welcome. Then, with lovely surrounding gardens and several outdoor terraces from which to admire views of Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island, and immediate access to a small bay and jetty for boat tours, your sense of place is truly set while staying at On the Point.
You’ll also have easy access to the geothermal highlights of wider Rotorua such as Tikitere, the Waimangu Valley and Pohutu Geyser, yet the hotel itself offers plenty of onsite facilities too. Spa and massage services, tennis courts, a gym and sauna, bikes for hire and a well-stocked library will certainly fill in the gaps between outings and gourmet meals in the main dining room, making On the Point a super all-round option when visiting the volcanic fields of Rotorua.
Room Options
The spacious guestrooms at all-suite On the Point are certainly bigger than most, each coming with at least one private balcony, a furnished lounge area, king-size beds and bathrooms which include a spa tub as standard. Some of the self-contained suites and villas then feature multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, dining areas, and even a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor Jacuzzi in some. There’s a long list of in-room amenities for everyone too, such as air-con; underfloor heating; TVs and DVD players; Wi-Fi; and lots more as you move through the room categories.
Lodge Suite
Lodge Suites are situated within the original house, so benefit from a large floorplan and Lake Rotorua views, as well as a private balcony and open-plan lounge area.Villa Apartment
Also situated away from the main building (located nearer the hotel’s tennis courts), the two-bedroom Villa Apartments are huge spaces which come with a fully equipped kitchen, furnished lounge and outdoor Jacuzzi; great for families and couples.Lake Cottage Suite
Stand-alone Lake Cottage Suites are found away from the main house, meaning extra privacy while relaxing in your living room, on the furnished terrace or in your outdoor Jacuzzi.Main Suite
The Main Suite is in the main lodge building and comes with a private balcony and benefits from slightly enhanced lake views, as well as a super-king-size bed and separate lounge/dining area which adds a nice sense of independence to your stay.Lake Villa
The Lake Villa is a self-contained four-bedroom, three-bathroom spacious escape that’s ideal for families or small groups. A fully equipped kitchen and furnished lounge area, multiple terraces, an outdoor Jacuzzi and lake views complete the picture here.Facilities/Amenities
On the Point makes excellent use of the property’s original architecture, retaining its 1930s character while also providing a games room; small gym; spa and massage services; a sauna; library and tennis courts; plus babysitting and concierge services if needed.
Activities & Entertainment
The main attractions of Rotorua – in addition to Lake Rotorua itself – are the geothermal fields and mud pools, geysers, and native foliage that thrives in this unusual environment. Highlights of the Rotorua region include visits to Whakarewarewa; Tikitere – known as ‘Hell’s Gate’; the gorgeous Waimangu Valley; Pohutu Geyser; and hidden Orakei Korako, which is only accessible by boat. You can take an aircraft tour to see it all or hike the thermal field, treating yourself to a well-earned volcanic mud bath or spa treatment once there! Downtime at On the Point can include enjoying a lakeside massage, relaxing on the terrace with a book from the library or hiring a bike to explore various surrounding trails and villages.
