Welcoming guests back following an extensive rebuild in 2023, Southern Ocean Lodge comprises just 25 contemporary suites and pavilions with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows and chic limestone floors. Luxuriate in your stylish sanctuary with an EcoSmart fireplace, original works by local Kangaroo Island artists and unbroken views of the infinite Southern Ocean.

The dining experience at Southern Ocean Lodge is a gastronomic journey of Kangaroo Island, with ingredients sourced from local artisan providers and South Australia’s mainland regions. Breakfast, lunch and four-course dinners are included in your stay and are served in the main lodge restaurant overlooking Hanson Bay.

Relax in The Great Room where Kangaroo Island’s wilderness surrounds you, listening to the pounding waves of the Southern Ocean from the outside deck or while soaking in the heated outdoor plunge pool.

Adjoining both Flinders Chase and Cape Bouguer National Parks, the emphasis on any stay at Southern Ocean Lodge is discovering the great outdoors, the unique landscapes, flora and fauna of Kangaroo Island.

A choice of signature experiences is included at Southern Ocean Lodge, a half-day excursion takes you to Flinders Chase National Park where you can marvel at the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, rock formations carved by thousands of years of wind, rain and pounding waves. Walk among the Australian sea lion colony with a Lodge naturalist at Seal Bay and witness the antics of kangaroos and wallabies as they graze at Grassdale while you enjoy a glass of local wine and canapes.

If after a day of adventure and discovering Kangaroo Island’s delights you feel the need for a revitalising body treatment or soothing massage, Southern Spa offers a menu of rejuvenating treatments using Australian-made spa products and Kangaroo Island ingredients.

These one-of-a-kind suites also feature a private terrace and a horizon-edge plunge pool for taking in awe-inspiring sunsets.
Ocean Pavilion

Ocean Pavilion

The ultra-exclusive Ocean Pavilion is the highest level of accommodation at Southern Ocean Lodge. Designed as an owners’ residence, it’s ideal for larger groups or families, sleeping up to eight guests in its four king bedrooms. It also features two lounges (one with a suspended feature fireplace), four ensuite bathrooms with oversized rain showers and freestanding baths, a premium in-suite bar and outdoor terraces with plunge pools for admiring the 180° coastal views.

Southern Ocean Lodge offers a range of signature and bespoke experiences to showcase Kangaroo Island's stunning natural wonders. Adventure-seekers can embark on guided treks, coastal walks and enjoy many wildlife encounters.

The ‘Wonders of KI ‘tour takes guests into the Flinders Chase National Park where they can expect to see local koalas, Cape Barren geese, New Zealand fur seals at Admirals Arch, kangaroos resting in the shade and Rosenberg’s goannas.

The lodge also takes guests on an excursion to Seal Bay – one of the only remaining accessible colonies of Australian sea lions. Here, guests can walk amongst these marine mammals on the island’s pristine sands. Alternatively, guests can head out into the night on a ‘Nocturnal Tour’ to spot Tamar wallabies, possums and koalas.

For history buffs, the ‘Southern Sundowners’ experience is a must do. Each night, this tour takes guests into ‘Grassdale’ – an original Kangaroo Island settlers’ property – to mingle, sip on some fine Kangaroo Island wine and learn about the history of the island.

Other thrilling activities include quad bike tours and exhilarating sandboarding expeditions for those who like action-packed days.

Or, for guests keen to just relax, the Southern Spa provides a tranquil oasis, where guests can indulge in rejuvenating treatments while gazing out at the breathtaking ocean views.
