Hotel information
Just a 90-minute drive or 20-minute charter flight away from Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory, Finniss River Lodge presents an intimate off-grid experience that's equally suited for families travelling with intrepid teens, or an adventurous honeymoon.
Family owned and operated by a third-generation pastoralist family, Finniss River Station (where the lodge is based) has been running Brahman cattle for over 30 years. It was first founded Leo Venturin, who – at only 25-years-old in 1936 – aimed to explore everything Australia had to offer. Now in his eighties, with four children and eight grandchildren, Leo welcomes others worldwide to fall in love with the area’s wonderful nature.
The lodge invites up to 12 guests at any time to enjoy a unique and all-inclusive outback experience, staying in one of six luxuriously appointed rooms. This also includes gourmet dining (along with selected wines, beers and spirits) – in addition to included experiences allowing you to explore the area in depth. Choose a buggy tour, walk-about safari, ‘cows and canapes’ tour, airboat adventure (three-night minimum stay required) or birdwatching.
Further adventures available at an additional cost include everything from fishing charters to scenic helicopter flights and nature tours with wildlife and survival expert, Andrew Ucles.
The time of year you visit in can also alter how you experience Finniss River Lodge, as it’s encompassed in the tropical savannah region of Australia’s Top End. The months of April to November are the dry season, which sees less rainfall than the green (or ‘wet’) season that runs between December and April. There are also six to 13 'sub-seasons' identified in the indigenous calendar within this specific region.
Room Options
With only six luxury suites accommodating for up to twelve guests at a time, you can enjoy a more personal getaway while staying at Finniss River Lodge. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows open out to unparalleled views of the surrounding tropical savannah region of Australia’s Top End.

Activities & Entertainment
Two guided, on-property outings per day are included during your stay at Finniss River Lodge.
There are also optional experiences you can add-on for an extra fee.
Included Experiences
Explore paper bark forests, floodplains, coastline, savannah woodlands and rainforests on a buggy tour along the bush tracks through the cattle property. With its minimal noise, the buggies cause little disturbance to the wildlife in the area, immersing you in your beautiful surroundings.
Alternatively, why not ditch the buggy and head out on foot with one of the walk-about safaris? Treading among the five ecosystems, you get a closer look at the local wildlife in their natural habitat. Either go for a leisurely walk under shaded canopies or trek through the property’s remote areas.
You can also enjoy the following Included Experiences:
- Cows & Canapes – led by local guides, you’ll learn about the family history and hear their stories, all the while sipping your sundowner as you journey in an open sided buggy.
- Station Experiences – ask any questions you may have about the operation of a remote cattle station. Expert guides are on hand to provide their knowledge when you need an answer.
- Airboat Adventures* – head out on a 50-minute airboat ride along the Finniss River floodplain, spotting resident crocodiles, barramundi, turtles, feral pigs and more as you go.
- Birds of Finniss River Region – many waterbirds live in the Finniss River floodplain/coastal area, so be on the lookout for magpie geese and pied herons along with your guide.
*For guests staying three or more nights.
“Free time add-ons” – Airboat Adventures available on request for stays under three nights.
Add-on Experiences
Join wildlife and survival expert, Andrew Ucles, on an ‘Australian Wild Tour’ to learn how to track wildlife, make fire from scratch and source local bush tucker. Not only is Andrew the lodge’s resident wildlife and survival specialist, but he also has his own Netflix Series: “Born to be Wild”.
You can also opt for the following Add-on Experiences:
- Fishing charters – catch barramundi, salmon and mud crabs at gorgeous Bynoe Harbour.
- Scenic helicopter flights – fly over the 50,000-acre Finniss River Station to Five Mile Beach.
- Crocs in the wild – go out spotting crocs, searching for the lagoon’s dominant individuals.
- Private tours – speak to your guide to book an exclusive tour on whatever you most desire.
Fine Dining & Bar
At Finniss River Lodge, all your meals and beverages are inclusive during your stay.
Your chef will create a mouth-watering menu for you to indulge in, sourcing and utilising a variety of the country’s best tropical produce within each dish. This includes local prawns, mud crab, barramundi, duck, beef and seasonal foods like mangoes or limes. In the mornings, you can even enjoy a steaming coffee made using freshly ground beans or a sip on a locally crafted tea.
