India’s capital and cultural centre is a sprawling metropolis of old and new. Old Delhi filled with Hidden streets and alleys, whilst New Delhi boasts grand European style boulevards and magnificent landmarks.
Culturally rich, chaotic and completely absorbing, Delhi is a contrasting city of old meets new; modern day shopping malls and grand colonial monuments stand alongside ancient temples, tombs and mosques. A microcosm of the whole sub-continent, a few days in this lively city will only just scratch the surface.
For historic sites, you can’t miss Shah Jahn’s Red Fort, Jama Masjid Mosque and Humayun's Tomb, whilst Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi’s main street, gives a fascinating insight into a historic way of life. The peaceful Lodi Gardens provide some respite from the chaos and the museums and galleries will enlighten and captivate. Or maybe, taking a luxury train journey from Delhi with the Maharajas' express will be the right approach to getting a glimpse of the majesty of this area.
Either way, a visit to India’s cultural heart is a truly rewarding experience.
