Full accommodation information

Perched amongst serene pine forests in the shadow of the Himalayas, Six Senses Thimphu a is a high-altitude haven that overlooks the glowing lights of Bhutan’s capital. Its location provides a comfortable escape from the bustling Thimphu yet remains close enough to access its myriad attractions.

The lodge belongs to Six Senses Bhutan, a collection of five boutique properties each offering its own character, environment, and experiences. Guests may visit one of the lodges or incorporate them all into one tailor-made journey for the ultimate Asian adventure. Six Senses Thimphu is the largest lodge of the troupe, affectionately referred to as The Palace in the Sky due to its lofty perch and grand design.

At an elevation of almost 3,000m, all 25 spacious villas and suites offer striking views over the verdant Thimphu Valley, with floor-to-ceiling windows and private oversized decks. Accommodation is beautifully simple and understated, where sleek, soft interiors make for a welcome return following a day trip.

Being the capital, Thimphu has a myriad of attractions and is still the world’s only capital without a single set of traffic lights. Learn more about Bhutanese culture at The National Textile Museum and Folk Heritage Museum and admire the iconic Tashichho Dzong which houses the seat of government and religion.

Back at the lodge, get close to nature by hiking a short distance uphill for alfresco Afternoon Tea at Lungsigang, where prayer flags dance in the air. Treat yourself to sunset cocktails and canapés at Nimnub point and be sure to pick a table by the floor-to-ceiling windows at Namkha, for stellar dinner views. The restaurant excels in healthy cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients freshly plucked from the lodge’s organic garden, and you’ll get to gaze at the Himalayan peaks in the distance.

Six Senses Thimphu also lends itself to total rest and relaxation. Start the day with a meditation session in the airy Prayer Pavilion, work your way through the treatment menu at Six Senses spa, and admire the seated golden Buddha that dominates the skyline next to one of the calming reflecting pools.

There are 25 spacious villas and suites, all with organic linens, local artefacts and a traditional wood-burning bukhari stove. Other amenities include a wine fridge and mini bar, espresso machine, writing desks and yoga mats.

Culture

From cultural activities to national sports, Six Senses Thimphu has something special for every pastime. Get your culture fix by strolling around the quaint riverside city of Thimphu and tour the ancient monasteries and temples dotted around the hillside surrounding the lodge. You can catch eyes with Buddha Dordenma from the hotel, but it’s well worth venturing across the valley to see the 170ft golden statue, one of the world's tallest seated Buddhas. Take a look inside to discover 125,000 smaller Buddhas! Close to the hotel, learn your Bhutanese name and your fortune during a private session with a Buddhist monk at Pangri Zampa, a 16th century monastic school. Finish your day with an archery session, the national sport of Bhutan, in the hotel’s apple orchards.

Spa

Health, according to ancient Bhutanese healing practices, comes from balance between body and mind and understanding how one affects the other. Start your healing journey in the spa, spread across multiple pavilions where massage and relaxation therapies are combined with yoga and fitness.

Before every treatment, you’ll be invited to hold a clear quartz crystal to absorb and regulate energy, and releases blockages. Menu highlights include the signature Bhutanese hot-stone bath, a 24k gold age-defying facial and a wellness screening which looks at body composition, metabolism, oxygen distribution, heart function and circulation. Afterwards, soak in the 25m heated indoor pool to achieve ultimate relaxation.
