Are you ready for a Christmas like no other, where the smells of Glühwein and roasting meat pepper the air as you wander through the glowing Christmas Market? With this eight-day cruise on the AmaLucia down the Rhine River, you’ll enjoy the most heart-warming festivities, stopping at towns and cities that ooze the Christmas spirit from every square mile during the month of December.

Embark on your voyage from the beautiful canal city of Amsterdam, travelling towards Cologne, your first German city, which will be lit up with festive light. Each of the ports-of-call on this river voyage have plenty of excursions to take part in, including bike rides, wine tastings and tours of the cities that you visit. On top of that, you’ll be well positioned to visit the many seasonal attractions along the way.

After leaving Cologne, you’ll travel down through one of the most scenic areas of the Rhine, known as the Rhine Gorge, spotting castles from your balcony or the public areas of the AmaCerto. Moving on to Rüdesheim and Ludwigshafen in the south-west of Germany, you’ll be delighted with a host of cities and towns to explore through the cruise excursions or simply enjoy the Christmas markets.

Next on the list of ports that you’ll visit are Strasbourg, home to the oldest Christmas Market in France, and Breisach which is great for visiting Freiburg. From here you’ll be travelling to Basel in Switzerland for your flight home.

Whilst on your voyage you’ll be surrounded by comfort and elegance on the AmaLucia, a small 162 passenger luxury vessel that’s perfectly engineered for river cruising. On board you'll find everything that you might need for a special experience including fine dining, unlimited excursions and evening entertainment that gives you an authentic feel for the destinations you’re travelling to.

Itinerary

Take a short flight from the UK to Amsterdam, then transfer to Amsterdam City Centre from Schiphol airport to embark on your Christmas AmaLucia cruise.
The first true day of your voyage is spent in Amsterdam. Take some time to celebrate the wintery fun in the capital of The Netherlands at the Christmas villages, get your ice skates out and practice your skills on the rink or hop from stall to stall picking up Dutch Olieballen and warm drinks as you go.
This morning you’ll wake up in the beautiful city of Cologne with its majestic medieval cathedral and gothic architecture. The city lights up at Christmas with a large market nestled in the square outside the cathedral and, of course, we can’t forget the huge tree right at the centre of the fun. Cologne has seven Christmas markets which will be sure to light up the start of your voyage!
Today you’ll be cruising through the upper-middle Rhine Gorge. This area of Germany is surrounded by stunning castles, sweeping hills and the ever-flowing river. Once you arrive in Rüdesheim, you’ll have plenty to do, from wine tastings in the local area to hiking through the wintery vineyards. Rüdesheim also has a fabulous Christmas Market that you should visit as it gets darker. Don't forget to sample the local Rudeshiemer coffee!
Ludwigshafen is a city in the Rhine Nektar Area. This port of call is a fantastic place to do some Christmas shopping – head to Heidelberg and the Hauptstrausse and pick up some last-minute gifts. If you’re already shopped enough, spend some time in one of the oldest cities in Germany, Speyer, famed for its charming medieval architecture.
Your first and only visit to France is today’s port of call, so make the most of your time in the breathtaking old city of Strasbourg. With Christmas market history dating all the way back to 1570, you won’t want to miss it. One of the best ways to get to know the city is by bike – why not take a bike tour and then head back to the main square for a wander through the glowing Christmas market?
Breisach is the final spot on your voyage. Stay in the area for bike rides through the French countryside or head further afield to Freiberg, home to the imposing Freiburg Münster, and its stunning gothic architecture. During your visit, it’ll also be home to the Christmas Markets, one of your last chances to taste Currywurst and Glühwein from the stalls.
Disembark to transfer to airport for flight back to UK.
